Botanical Gardens are generally public spaces dedicated to a city’s pursuit of horticulture.  At a base level they are beautiful spaces to visit to relax and enjoy nature however they often have scientific research, educational facilities and/or conservation programs connected to them.  They can be great places to visit to learn more about plant varieties, the history of plants and to also see different varieties of healthy species; both extant (in abundance) and extinct (endangered).  One of the earliest examples of a botanical garden is the Hanging Garden Of Babylon that existed largely for medicinal purposes.  In ancient history the Greeks and Roman also developed botanical gardens for medicinal and recreation purposes.  During the Renaissance, botanical gardens became more prevalent across Europe and were additionally used as a means to study and classify new plant varieties that were introduced by ships returning from their expeditions across the globe.  Today they exist in both small and large scale across the world and can be dedicated to recreation, research, education and conservation activities.
